Touch to drive ! Planethybrid is a touchscreen exhibit, allowing you to drive the E-Class with just one finger. Experience a quite different Mercedes-Benz exhibit, containing sheeps, a penguin and a fusion rocket. The comic style world is about all the benefits of the hybrid engine. Certainly a tricky task, putting 9 topics into an exhibit without spoiling everything with pages of text and diagrams. In the end we came up with this story-based interface, letting the user ‘drive’ the information. And this is fun for the user and was most definitely fun for us, going through iterations of different sheeps and birds. PlanetHybrid premiered at the Geneva Auto-Salon in 2012 and is still going around the world. (2013)
We employed all sorts of “dirty tricks” to make our realtime compositions look awesome: physics, post-shader madness and of course some neat gpu particles all over the place. The rest is business as usual, take an infrared camera and check for some movement to add some responsiveness. Did i mention the overall resolution ? Let’s say 3840×2160px running at 50fps, fed with one machine. And the best part of the project ? ..was definetely just doing some fancy visuals. The Clariant Wall premiered in Flims Switzerland at the annual company event.

The Mercedes F800 Tomograph is literally an interactive screen exhibit. The screen itself is the interface and can be moved horizontally as well as vertically. The screen acts as a window into a different reality, turning the white model into a realistic shaded version and some xray visualisations.

Navigating with the exhibit, you are able to look inside the car, experiencing the unique interior design and details of technology, such as the hybrid engine. You might wonder about the quality and look of the software. Yes , it’s realtime, it runs at 60 frames per second. It doesn’t even need a highend graphics card. We hope you enjoy the documentation of the design process at our studio and pictures of the final product.

B(e) a friend is definetely one fun exhibit, promoting the new B-Class and its features in a rather different way. Each feature is woven into a short animated comic, taking a more human perspective on its use. These stories can be accessed with an transparent shiftscreen, completing the printed base layer. To catch attention and do a little bit of crowd control, the exhibit has a so called teaser screen.Employing some Kinect-magic, people could take pictures of themselves and add these to the Facebook page of Mercedes Benz. People went just crazy on the teaser and uploaded the insane amount of 10.000 pictures to facebook during the IAA week.

We would like to thank above all, everyone who made the photo-shooting possible: Tina, Lasse, Oscar, Jacob, Barbara, Martin and Martin, Thomas, Michi, Svea and all patient parents :)

It doesn’t matter if you go shopping, stop for a meeting or having an appointment with your dental torturer. There are exhibit concepts which look very simple. This one isn’t. We had to employ a route finding algorithm (A-Star). Something which analyzes over 200.000 possible positions within a network of streets and find a way within microseconds. Add some battery usage behaviour, charging stations and over 50 textflags reacting to the current state of the battery. Thanks to Heinrich for the Plugins and Tom (Glarestudios) for fixing the A-Class model.

Let’s start with some figures: 6 exhibits, 7 people working for wirmachenbunt and +5 motor shows around the world.

We created 4 exhibits for Mercedes-Benz, communicating their new Driver Assist Systems such as Lane Assist, an aid helping you to stay on track while being totally messed up. just kidding ! Furthermore we have the Distronic feature, Nightview/Adaptive Light and Attention Assist. For each new technology we developed different interaction models and storytelling. Let’s take Distronic for example, we thought driving the new E-Class / S-Class would be fun and gets the visitor involved. We employed game mechanics and added situations, where the new car feature comes into play. Naturally, the exhibits attracted lot’s of kids, the mercedes customers of the future.

This is the right place to say hello and thank you to our friends at ‘Atelier Markgraph’ who got us involved in this project. Especially Ralf, Alex and Herr Garten who trusted our little Production Studio to manage this challenging project. But there is more to come, right now (August 2009) we work on two more exhibits joining the old bunch for the IAA in Frankfurt this year.

This project is our debut to the world of motor shows.
